Occupant-2-Occupant Side Sled Testing: Innovations & Insights

Petr Záruba - TÜV SÜD Czech s.r.o.

Abstract

TÜV SÜD Czech has recently enhanced its ALIS system, an already state-of-the-art solution for side sled testing with intrusion in complex side crashes. This system is designed to test and develop critical vehicle safety components such as airbags, seatbelts, seats, and interior trim. The latest upgrade, ALIS Occupant-to-Occupant (O2O), now enables simultaneous physical testing of both the driver and passenger, providing a more comprehensive assessment of occupant protection. It also facilitates the development of central airbags for the relevant Euro NCAP assessment. This presentation will provide insights into the operation of ALIS O2O, highlighting its key features and its role in advancing automotive safety standards. A part of the presentation will focus on sled set-up research for near-side biomechanical response and far-side (O2O) kinematics. Additionally, we will explore the integration of FEM simulations and discuss how they contribute to improving vehicle safety performance.

Behavior of small anthropomorphic test devices (ATD) in frontal impact crashes

Thilo Wackenroder, Andreas Schäuble - DEKRA Automobil GmbH

Abstract

In the last three years, DEKRA has conducted a series of standardized crash tests in the UN R137 setup with a mid-size sedan to collect and evaluate performances of different ATD types under comparable conditions. The series of eight crashes allows to study the ATD behavior in three types of restraint system setups. The aim of this presentation is to provide an insight to the impact kinematic, dynamic and interaction of small persons represented by three different ATD types (H305, TH05-A. Elderly ATD) and to compare the findings in the full-width frontal impact scenario. DEKRA performed the crash tests using the occupant positions derived from the FMVSS 208 requirement for small female on the driver side, a survey-based “real life” position on the passenger side and the rear seating position provided by the vehicle. Through the series, the ATDs were positioned in each of the seats. This presentation shows the differences of their interaction within the range of restraint system setups under one test condition. We will also be discussing the findings gained by use of the Obese ATD during the crash test series. An anticipation of accident behavior for small persons with high BMI towards the risk of injury and submarining in frontal crashes will be given.
